The power of a link

After reading on techcrunch that bit.ly and tinyurl.com is supposedly worth 8million and 46million dollars respectively, it made me wonder about the power of a link.

As the world becomes more connected (how many times have I said that?), more and more links propagate through the web. As the web is linking more and more data (instead of websites themselves), the power of a link becomes even greater.

The advantage of a link itself is self-explanatory. It was created to go from one point to another. Simple. But because there are now so many links now unperturbed by time and space (as oppsed to somethin like roads in real-life), isn’t there a way to exploit a link as an entity?

A great new website that does exactly that, http://linkbee.com/, allows you to add advertising “on” the link itself. With it, you can either create a go-between page or a banner atop the page you are visting.

I am really sure there is some billionaire idea there somewhere that utilises links in a new way.
