One of my suggestions was to use gzip compression when fetching the Last.fm data. Didn't that speed up the process enough?

PS: Why can't I login with my twitter account to Disqus?

I have contacted them, but not with a proposal. I asked if there was a way to speed up the API and when they will come running after me asking for a share in revenue. Neither of them were likely. Hehe.

I think I'll send them a direct proposal though. See what they think.

Have you thought about approaching Last.fm with the idea? Do up a proposal and send it off to them. They could implement the idea, but you have done the hard yards, and 13,000 users have registered - so maybe you could figure out a deal with them directly?
