Chatting to strangers on Omegle.com
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009Omegle.com is a site that allows you to chat to a stranger by one simple click. It’s a weird experience.
At first, when clicking “start a conversation”, it immediately throws you into the deep end. I didn’t know why, but I felt nervous. Two people shoved together and being prompted to say “hi!”.
The thing is. I confused it with real life. For the first few times, you are really nervous. Then when I realised, “hey, this is the internet. I’ll never hear or see this person again”, I started relaxing… Relaxing up to the point where I didn’t care what I was saying.
Once I was a lion, learning to talk, “roaring” all the way, a philosopher spewing stuff like “do you agree with the idea that it is best to remain in a constant state of departure while always arriving. It saves on the introductions and goodbyes?”, to a robot designed to pass the Turing test. And yes, you get weird responses too. I’ve had copy-pasters, cats and people testing to see how helpful I am by claiming that their daddy is touching them; ending with a “jesus loves you”.
In seriousness, it is actually an interesting “human” experience: the way technology brings random people together, to talk.
Give it a go!
